Nominations for the 93rd Annual Academy Awards
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has just announced their nominations for the 93rd Annual Academy Awards, and, as usual, there were a few unexpected inclusions and snubs.
As predicted, leading the way is David Fincher's "Mank" with ten nominations, including Picture, Director, Actor, and Supporting Actress. It was followed with a six-way tie between "The Father," "Judas and the Black Messiah," "Minari," "Nomadland," "Sound of Metal," and "The Trial of the Chicago 7", which got six nods each.
The first big snub that jumps out is Aaron Sorkin for Best Director, who, after receiving nods at the Critics' Choice, Golden Globes, and DGA Awards, seemed like a sure thing. He was inexplicably replaced with Thomas Vinterberg for "Another Round."
Another surprising snub comes in Documentary Feature, though perhaps we shouldn't be too surprised about it. "Dick Johnson is Dead" has been the most popular documentary throughout the season, but recently The Academy has ended up snubbing the popular pick in this category for some reason, including "Apollo 11" and "Won't You Be My Neighbor?".
Lastly, as far as snubs go, seeing "Mank" miss out on Original Screenplay and Film Editing nods is rather shocking given the popularity of the film.
Surprise inclusions include Lakeith Stanfield in Supporting Actor for "Judas and the Black Messiah" and the extremely unfortunate (and embarrassing) addition of "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" to Adapted Screenplay.
Other than that, nothing too unexpected. At the moment, it still appears to be Nomadland's to lose, but you never know. Perhaps the guilds will lean towards a different film in the coming weeks. The 93rd Annual Academy Awards will take place on April 25th. Be sure to check back for the winners.
