Nominations for the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards

Marriage Story

Earlier this morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominations for the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards, and as usual, there were plenty of surprises to be found.

For starters, after taking a backseat for the start of the critics' awards, it was Noah Baumbach's outstanding drama "Marriage Story" that ended up leading the pack with six nominations, followed by Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" and Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" with five each.

One of the biggest surprises was seeing Noah Baumbach miss out on a Director nomination, while, shockingly, Todd Phillips made a surprise appearance there for "Joker." Phillips' film also unexpectedly showed up in the Best Picture (Drama) category.

Other surprises included a snub for Robert De Niro ("The Irishman"), who was replaced with Christian Bale for "Ford v Ferrari," as well as a snub for Willem Dafoe's excellent performance in "The Lighthouse," presumably replaced by Anthony Hopkins for "The Two Popes."

It's certainly going to be a very interesting race. If last year taught us anything, it's that you can never tell what the HFPA is going to choose. You may recall that "Bohemian Rhapsody" had just two nominations (for Best Picture (Drama) and Best Actor (Drama)) and it won them both, showing that getting snubbed for Director doesn't necessarily rule out the possibility of being the big winner of the evening, which could be good news for "Marriage Story."

We'll just have to wait until the ceremony on January 5th to see how it all goes down. In the meantime, please see below for a list of today's nominations for film:
