Nominations for the 91st Annual Academy Awards

Olivia Colman and Emma Stone in "The Favourite"

The nominations for the 91st Annual Academy Awards have been announced, and as usual, there were plenty of surprises to be found this morning.

What wasn't a surprise, however, was that "Roma" and "The Favourite" tied for the most nominations with ten each, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress (x2 for "The Favourite"), and Best Original Screenplay. Not far behind were "A Star is Born" and "Vice" with eight each.

As far as surprises go, where to begin? "Roma" made a surprise appearance in Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress after having been mostly absent there the entire season. However, on the flip side, the film was shockingly left out of Best Film Editing, which is usually a bad sign in terms of Best Picture chances.

Speaking of Best Picture, after its win at the Producers Guild of America Awards this past weekend, a lot of people assumed "Green Book" was the favorite to take the award, and while it did make a surprise appearance in Best Film Editing, it was snubbed for Best Director, which is an even worse sign for its Best Picture chances.

Other major snubs include Bradley Cooper for Best Director, a nomination he had been receiving everywhere, including the Critics' Choice, Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Directors Guild of American, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?," the outstanding Mr. Rogers documentary that seemed unbeatable for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar, and Timothee Chalamet for "Beautiful Boy," who had received his nomination everywhere else.

So where does this leave us in terms of what will win Best Picture? Looking at the film that received all of the usually-necessary nominations, that would point to "Blackkklansman," "The Favourite," and "Vice." It's still possible that "Green Book" could go all the way without a Director nod "Driving Miss Daisy"-style, but missing a nod there tends to be a death knell. "Roma" could certainly overcome missing a Film Editing nod, and with it making its surprise appearance in two acting categories, it would appear to have the support of The Academy's biggest branch, so my guess at the moment would be that it goes back to being the favorite film and ultimately wins Best Picture as many believed it would.

We'll just have to wait until the big night on February 24th to find out. In the meantime, please see below for a complete list of today's Oscar nominations:
