Nominations for the 2019 BAFTA Awards

Earlier this morning, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced their nominations, with the entirely expected result of "The Favourite" leading the way with a whopping 12 nods, including Best Film, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress (x2), Original Screenplay, and Outstanding British Film. The next closest films had seven nominations, and included "Roma," "A Star is Born," "Bohemian Rhapsody," and "First Man."

Major surprises included yet another snub for Ethan Hawke, who has been the clear, overwhelming frontrunner in the Best Actor category throughout the critics awards, as well as the omission of Regina King, who has been dominating the Best Supporting Actress category. It was also a little surprising to see the major love for "Cold War," which not only appeared in Foreign Language Film, but also Director, Original Screenplay, and Cinematography.

Speaking of Best Director, it's very much worth noting that BAFTA has given us a much better lineup than the DGA attempted to do yesterday, putting Yorgos Lanthimos in his rightful place, while leaving out Adam McKay and Peter Farrelly. It's still Cuaron's to lose, but it's just nice to see the right people getting acknowledged.

Other surprised included seeing Steve Coogan make it into Lead Actor for his outstanding performance in "Stan & Ollie," Viola Davis getting a nod in Lead Actress for "Widows," and "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" getting left out of the Documentary category.

At the moment, I would guess that "The Favourite" will walk away with Outstanding British Film and a few other awards, while "Roma" will probably take Best Film. However, with the film's obviously strong support, I wouldn't discount the possibility of the former winning both. We'll just have to wait and see what happens when the awards are handed out on February 10th.
