Film Nominees for the 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards
Today, the Directors Guild of America announced their nominees for 2018, and to be quite blunt, at least one very obvious mistake was made.
In an extremely unfortunate choice on the part of the DGA, they have opted to snub Yorgos Lanthimos for his outstanding direction of "The Favourite" in favor of lesser work like Adam Mckay's "Vice" and Peter Farrelly's "Green Book." This, in turn, has killed any chance "The Favouirite" had of winning the Best Picture Oscar, for only once in about the last 50 years has a Best Picture Oscar winner failed to get a nomination here (Bruce Beresford, Driving Miss Daisy").
With pretty much no competition left in the way, Cuaron is the easy pick here. He's already been dominating the category throughout awards season, so he should have absolutely no problem winning here as well before going on to win the Oscar. Additionally, "Roma" should have no problem going on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, as "The Favourite" was its only serious competition there as well. Granted, "Roma" would be the best choice that The Academy's made in the last few years, but it's still a shame to see the best film of the year ignored once again.
The DGA Awards will be presented on February 17th. Coming up early tomorrow morning, we have the BAFTA nominations, so be sure to check back to see who makes the cut.
