The Winners of the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards

The 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards have just wrapped up, and with plenty of surprises to spare. The "big" winner of the evening was "Green Book," which won three awards that included Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), and Best Screenplay, while "Roma" (Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director) and "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Best Picture (Drama) and Best Actor (Drama)) were not far behind with two.

Both awards for "Bohemian Rhapsody" were a rather big surprise, with both heavily expected to go to Bradley Cooper's "A Star is Born," while Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) and Best Screenplay were expected to go to Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Favourite." Ali winning Best Supporting Actor was a strong possibility, as he's been a somewhat popular pick throughout the season, but still, the award was expected to go to frontrunner Richard E. Grant for "Can You Ever Forgive Me?". Meanwhile, it was fully expected that Lady Gaga would take Best Actress (Drama) for "A Star is Born," but in a rather pleasant surprise, the award was instead given to Glenn Close for her brilliant performance in "The Wife."

So what impact will this have on the awards season? Well, as has been fairly obvious, the Globes haven't really had that much influence lately. For example, half of the Best Picture Oscar winners of the last decade failed to win their respective Best Picture category at the Globes, while the last three Screenplay winners also failed to take home an Oscar. I think we can definitely rule out "Bohemian Rhapsody" as a serious contender, while "Green Book" remains a definite possibility. However, I think it's safe to say that "Roma" and "The Favourite" remain the frontrunners for the time being (the former of which was not allowed to compete in Best Picture due to it being a Foreign Language Film).

We won't really know for certain what film is in the lead for the Best Picture Oscar until the PGA Awards on the 19th, but at the very least, the awards tonight made for an entertainingly-random grab-bag of winners (well, something had to be entertaining about it to counter the terrible hosts). Next up we have the Directors Guild nomination happening on the 8th, followed by the BAFTA nominations in the early hours of the 9th, so be sure to check back to see who gets included as we continue the march towards the Oscars.
