The Winners of the 29th Annual Producers Guild of America Awards

The Producers Guild of America has just finished presenting their year-end awards, concluding with a pretty big and shocking finale. Guillermo del Toro's fantasy drama "The Shape of Water" has taken their top prize for Theatrical Motion Picture, defeating assumed frontrunners "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri" and "Lady Bird."

So what does this mean for the awards race? Do we have a new frontrunner? At the moment, I would have to say that the answer is "no," especially given the fact that Del Toro's film is not favored to win anything at the Screen Actors Guild Awards tomorrow evening, on top of the fact that the film did not even receive a nod for Best Cast (a nomination that all Best Picture winners have had for the last 20 years). This is not to mention the fact that the last two big PGA winners have failed to claim Best Picture at the Oscars. You could even go further to say that "The Shape of Water" has not had much support in the screenplay category, which is also necessary for winning the big Oscar prize. No, at this time, I would have to say that the frontrunner more than likely remains Martin McDonagh's incredible "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri."

As mentioned, we have another major awards event with the Screen Actors Guild Awards tomorrow night, where we will see if "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri" will win the big prize of Best Cast, which most are predicting it will (along with Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell), so be sure to check back tomorrow night for the full results.
