First Reviews for Damien Chazelle's La La Land Are In
After two gorgeous previews for Damien Chazelle's "La La Land," audiences have been patiently waiting for word as to whether the film was going to be able to match the anticipation that's been building steadily for it over the past several months. Well, the film finally had its premiere at the Venice Film Festival just a couple of days ago, which was followed up by the first batch of reviews, and if they're to be believed, it looks like Chazelle is going to have another critical hit on his hands.
Thus far, the film has received 14 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, all of which are positive, giving it a remarkable score of 9.2/10. Granted, there are still many more reviews to come, but this is certainly a good start. Take a look at what's being said so far:
"The most audacious big-screen musical in a long time, and - irony of ironies - that's because it's the most traditional." - Owen Gleiberman, Variety
"It has its head in the stars, and for a little over two wonderstruck hours, it lifts you up there too." - Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph
"A gorgeous romantic fever dream of a movie musical. La La Land is one for this age - and the ages. Stunning in every way." - Pete Hammond, Deadline Hollywood Daily
"An absolute triumph. 'La La Land' is a film you simply never want to stop watching." - Jessica Kiang, The Playlist
"A beautiful, audacious, aesthetically vibrant, and enchanting contemporary musical." - Rory O'Connor, The Film Stage
I was already really excited about seeing it this awards season, but now I'm somehow even more so. All of the talent involved was sure to bring about something special, so it's great to hear that the reviews are saying just that.
Unfortunately, for those of us who weren't able to make it to Venice (and subsequently can't make it to Toronto this month), there are still a couple of months left to wait before we finally get to lay eyes on it, but if these reviews are any indication, it'll definitely be worth the wait.
"La La Land" gets a limited release on December 2nd, followed by a wider release on December 16th.
